As an environmentally-friendly company, we try our best to protect our planet, be it with our recycling program, or bike patrol or low-emission green cars. Sometimes our employees like to go out together for lunch. Since we need to get back into the office ASAP, left-overs are quite common. All those styrofoam containers are harmful to the environment, but alas, what can one do? The Tiffin Project has a solution!
Its vision is to not only reduce the number of disposable containers used by take-out diners, but to also support local farmers in Vancouver. Much of our produce is imported in large quantity, and it is about time we pay attention to homegrown fruit and veggies. Yes, it is understandable that restaurants do not want to pay a premium for the produce, however the food grown locally is higher in quality and is grown organically. Customers are willing to pay a premium for sustainable foods, such as the partnership the Vancouver Aquarium has with many local seafood restaurants, calledOcean Wise.
In addition to eliminating the unnecessary waste posted by take-out containers, the Tiffin round metal containers will provide the restaurant CAD $4 to allow the restaurant the opportunity to afford higher quality foods from local producers. These containers can be used for take-out or to store left-overs. This idea will also help decrease the waste in landfills. Talk about killing two birds with one stone…an environmentally-friendly stone to say the least.
The Tiffin Project helps restaurateurs and diners alike, and indeed in a cyclical manner. Customers who bring their tiffins receive a discount off their meal, thereby encouraging them to return to the restaurant in the future. The hopes is that foodies will frequent restaurants who are supporting local farmers and making eco-conscious choices in their menus and food preparation process. The tiffins come in two sizes – a 1.1-liter bowl container and a 1.75-liter partitioned container, both priced at CAD $25 when picked up at a participating restaurant or CAD $37 when delivered.
